Stamford English Language Centre (SELC) is established to cater to the needs of secondary school students, college students as well as working adults. Students can attend the courses on full-time or part-time basis at the centre. As for group employees of corporate clients, courses can be customised and conducted either at SELC or the client's premises.

English for Business (LCCI Examinations Board)

This Business English course aims to provide learners with the English language skills that will enable them to reach their personal and professional goals in the business world. The course prepares learners to be familiar with various forms of business writing, and guides them to master important oral communication skills essential in a business environment and to participate effectively in business meetings and discussions.

Course Content

This course covers three main aspects. They are:

1. Language Awareness
   - Grammar in business writing
2. Oral Communication Skills
   - Oral presentation in business context
3. Business Writing
   - Business letters
   - Business reports
   - Company leaflets
   - Company notices
   - Emails & faxes
   - Memos
   - Minutes of meeting
   - News releases
Assessment

The LCCIEB English for Business Written Examinations test practical business communication skills, using formats drawn from business activities. Learners will be prepared for the examinations at the following levels:

1. English for Business (Preliminary)

This level aims to examine learners' fundamental knowledge of English as used in a business context. This is the target level for those who need to use English in their work in basic interaction, e.g. receptionists, line operatives, clerical or secretarial staff who have occasional contact with speakers of English.

2. English for Business (Level I)

This level aims to examine learners' ability to understand and write basic English and use it in simple, brief business communication. This is the target level for those who need to work with overseas counterparts on a routine functional level, e.g. clerical staff administrators, line supervisors and secretarial staff.

3. English for Business (Level II)

This level aims to examine learners' ability to understand and write English using formats that are current and common in business communication. This is the target level for those who may be involved in extensive contact with overseas colleagues, customers or counterparts, e.g. line managers, technical or research personnel and senior administrators.

4. English for Business (Level III)

This level aims to examine learners' ability to understand and write English used in a variety of ways within a range of business context and to employ appropriate format and style. This is the target level for those for whom establishing and sustaining business relationship in English is essential, e.g. sales personnel and senior administrators.

5. English for Business (Level IV)

This level aims to examine learners' ability to understand authentic business text and write English in a wide variety of ways within an extensive range of business context. This is the target level for personnel who need to participate fully in business meetings or attend conferences or conventions.

12 weeks per level (4 hours per week)

Communication Skills Programme

Business meeting skills, business writing and presentation are indispensable to many in a business organisation. This eight-week programme is designed to help working adults to develop and improve these important skills. Alongside the overall aim of the programme to improve communication skills, emphasis is placed on three areas:

- Effective writing skills,

- Proper speech and

- An ability to use and understand business English.

The Communications Skills course comes in three levels:

- Pre-Intermediate

- Intermediate

- Upper Intermediate

The first level addresses difficulties of the participants who are shy or reluctant to use English by developing and improving their knowledge of grammar, writing and presentation skills.

The second level is designed for those who are currently using English language at some level in their daily communication.

The third level develops the abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking English so that the students will become effective communicators in their organisation.

Before admission to the course, applicants shall sit for a proficiency test to determine their level of skills.

The course also introduces students to different methods of business communication, including the use of modern technology in communications.

Course Content

The course covers:

1. Grammar and Writing

This session gives a friendly introduction to the rules of grammar. These rules will be taught in the context that they are applied in everyday use of the English language. Interesting articles from newspapers and magazines will be used in exercises.

2. Reading and Comprehension

Special emphasis will be given to reading and comprehension. Again, students will be taught with text from newspapers and magazines. They will be introduced to concepts of skimming, scanning and determining meanings of words through contextual clues.

3. Listening and Speech Skills

Special emphasis will be given to correct pronunciation, intonation and expression. Public speaking will be introduced at various levels.

4. Business English

This subject will focus on terminology, format and language expression required for effective communication.

Public Speaking & Presentation Skills

This course is for adults who want to learn to speak with clarity, conviction and confidence before an audience, for business or personal reasons.

The Public Speaking course aims to:

- Develop communicational skills one step at a time

- Hone listening and evaluation skills

- Help acquire the skill of making speeches (prepared or impromptu)

Course Content

The course is divided into the following sessions:

- Basic Skills and Icebreakers

- Speech Organisation

- Speaking with Sincerity

- Working with Words

- Using Body Language

- Getting the Voice Good and Strong (Vocal variety)

- Adding Impact to your speech

- The Informative Speech

- The Entertaining Speech

- The Persuasive/Inspirational Speech

- Speech Showcase and Graduation

- Responding to questions and comments

There will be a two-hour lesson per week. Each lesson will cover one module of the course.
