SELC  

Stamford English Language Centre (SELC) is established to cater to the needs of secondary school students, college students as well as working adults. Students can attend the courses on full-time or part-time basis at the centre. As for group employees of corporate clients, courses can be customised and conducted either at SELC or the client's premises.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

This course is specifically for students who wish to study in tertiary institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada or New Zealand and intend to take IELTS examination administered in Malaysia or at other international sites.

The course prepares students for the IELTS academic module and provides:

- Breakdown of all four sections of the test,

- Exposure to the instructions and tasks found in the test,

- Mastery of the skills and strategies important for the test,

- Exposure to practice materials, and

- Practice in taking mock tests.

At the end of the course, arrangements will be made for students to take the IELTS examination at SELC or other sites near SELC.

Course Content

The course is divided into four sections to match the four modules of the test, namely Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There will be two two-hour lessons per week. Each lesson will cover a minimum of two sections, for example, Listening and Reading.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

TOEFL scores are required by most of the universities and colleges in the United States and Canada for the purpose of admission. Therefore, this course is designed to:

- Familiarise students with the computer-based examination format.

- Expose students to various question types and answering techniques.

- Help students to be aware of common errors and to avoid them.

Course Content

The course components include Listening, Structure, Reading and Writing.

- Listening measures the ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America. The lessons aim to help students to understand the main ideas, supporting ideas, important details and inferences in spoken English.

- Structure measures the ability to recognise language that is appropriate for standard written English. Grammar structure will be taught in this component.

- Reading measures the ability to understand short passages similar in topic and style to academic texts used in North American universities and colleges. Various types of reading comprehension passages will be given to help students to understand the ideas expressed in a written passage.

- Writing measures the ability to write any assigned topics. Students will learn the special skills that contribute to effective writing.

Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

The MUET programme aims to improve students' English proficiency and to provide them with the techniques and skills needed to excel in the MUET examination.

Course Content
1. Language Awareness
   - Discovery learning of grammar
   - Error identification and analysis
2. Writing
   - Summary writing using reports as well as articles
   - Expository writing including causal analysis, comparison and contrast of ideas
   - Argumentative writing
3. Reading
   - Analysis of a variety of academic reading texts
   - Guessing meaning using contextual clues
   - Identification of explicit and implicit messages
4. Listening
   - Global listening for main ideas
   - Focal or intensive listening for specific details
5. Speaking
   - Speaking with good articulation and enunciation
   - Speaking with an awareness of audience sensitivity when participating in group discussion
   - Making oral presentation individually and in groups

LCCIEB English for Business (Levels 2 & 3)

This course is conducted in line with the syllabus of the London Chamber of Commerce and Imdustry Examinations Board (LCCIEB). Students who pass Level 2 and Level 3 of LCCIEB examinations fulfill the English language requirement for entry into many universities in the U.K.
