In Malaysia, the word accountant is protected under Section 22 of the Accountant Act, 1967 which provides that a person shall not practice or hold himself out as an accountant unless he/she is registered as a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).

 

As a result of the amendments to the Accountants Act 1967, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), through its Qualifying Examination shall provide a new avenue for membership admission for those who do not currently possess a qualification recognized under Part I and Part II of the First Schedule to the Accountants Act 1967. Therefore, those who possess a qualification in accounting, business and finance recognized by the Public Services Department of the Government or other qualifications approved by the MIA Council are eligible to sit for the examination.

 

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants is a statutory body established under the Accountants Act, 1967 and is vested with, inter alia, the following functions under Section 6 of the 1967 Act:

 

  • to determine the qualifications of persons for admission as members;
  • to provide for training and education by the Institute or any other body, of persons practicing or intending to practice the profession of accountancy;
  • to approve the Malaysian Institute of Accountants Qualification Examination and to regulate and supervise the conduct of the Examination;
  • to regulate the practice of the profession of accountancy in Malaysia; and
  • to promote, in any manner it thinks fit, the interests of the profession of accountancy in Malaysia.

 

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

 

The MIA QE consists of 4 papers as follows:

 

  • Business and Company Law
  • Auditing and Assurance Services
  • Taxation
  • Advanced Financial Accounting and Reporting

 

MODE OF ASSESSMENT

 

  • By a 3-hour examinations per paper

 

EXAMINATION DATES

 

  • March & September

 

TITLE OF AWARD

Candidates who have successfully completed the MIA QE and who are judged to have the necessary practical experience, will be awarded the title ¡°Chartered Accountant¡±.

 

 

Requirement

 

  • No person shall be eligible to sit for the Qualifying Examination unless he/she possesses a qualification relating to accounting, business or finance recognized by the Public Service Department or other qualifications approved by the Council.

 

  • The applicant must possess a qualification of not lower than a first degree in relation to accounting, business or finance and the accounting content in the qualification referred to (i) above shall form not less than sixty percent (60%0 of the said qualification which will be assessed by the Examination Committee.
